Another Macrocosm: Davide Golzio’s exploration of technology

For SS24, Davide Golzio looks at things from a different perspective, blurring the boundaries between art and fashion. Keeping with his theme of unconventional materials and exploration of different forms showcased his ability to push boundaries while staying true to himself.

WAYFORDESIGN will be exhibiting at HOMI FASHION&JEWELS EXHIBITION
15-18 September 2023
A dedication to sustainability, craftsmanship, design and manufacturing with the ultimate accuracy. HOMI FASHION&JEWELS EXHIBITION explores a cultural challenge, is sustainability an utopian fantasy or a possibility?

Design is in constant mutation, it shows the present-day state of humanity. Putting up a collection like this is like writing a study with an alphabet of shapes and figures, it’s like adding on or taking out letters of an alphabet. Is design about problem solving, utility or production?

Yes, and mostly 3D printing, it can work very well. If you like an object, you can also make a large series of production. And then, lately, technology has also advanced a lot, for example until a few years ago there was no possibility to produce many pieces in a short time.

You are mixing hand drawings, 3D modeling and 3D printing?

I always try to find a way to personalize each piece according to each client’s demands.

Your pieces are a physical transition of mental images which, without the aid of machinery–would continue to live only in your mind. Do you see the piece as a final result or like a step in a line of transformation?

Yes, it all starts from just an idea, and then I a sketch by hand. Then I work with several 3D printing companies, that can give me different solutions for my ideas, I can choose from many types of finishes, colors, effects etc.

It is computer made, but it is also created by you.

Yes and I like mainly to work with a nylon powder called PA12 specifically and which is melted by laser and creates a resin that remains elastic and flexible. And and then later you can work with with colors. You can also create rings that are easily wearable, you can make one or two sizes and they can fit practically everyone. Then there are other materials instead that are more rigid, I also try to use a little bit of all the technologies that exist, which in any case 3D printing can offer.

You are exploring all the digital freedom offered by a software.

I really like cars in particular because I also intended to do car design. And for which we take inspiration from everything, from architecture to cars.

What value plastic will have in the future?

The plastic resin is not my enemy, specially with 3D printing, where you can recycle materials, and you can make sure you use just what you need to create a piece. There’s no need to waste anything, so for me it’s a material that I will still be using in my creations, at least for now.
