Alice Springs. Front Row
Currently on view at Galerie Huit Arles, Front Row brings together a striking collection of Alice Springs’s portraits.
For the first time at Rencontres d’Arles, June Newton’s portraits—shot under her artistic name, Alice Springs—take centre stage. Nearly fifty works reveal the quiet intimacy of cultural icons—Saint Laurent, Foucault, Westwood, Wenders—captured in moments of stillness, introspection, and presence.
Springs’ unobtrusive yet probing gaze finds a fragile equilibrium between familiarity and mystery. These images—formed through simplicity—oscillate between the glamour of recognition and the honesty of private selfhood.
Curated with the Helmut Newton Foundation, this exhibition returns these voices to the front row—illuminating a photographic legacy often overshadowed, but never eclipsed.
