“Lonley are All Bridges”, an installation curated by Maurizio Cattelan and Marta Papini, Fondazione ICA Milan on view until March 15th

The exhibition celebrates the work of two iconic artists, Birgit Jürgenssen (Vienna, 1949 - 2003) and Cinzia Ruggeri (Milan, 1942 - 2019), who have never met in person but are ideally placed in dialogue through their works, visions and research. Born at the end of the 1940s and trained in the 1960s, Birgit Jürgenssen and Cinzia Ruggeri tackled the role of women in society, weaving themes related to the body, identity and transformation. Their shared fascination with ornament and accessory, interpreted as an extension of the body and a tool for conquering women’s own space, traces the red thread of an exhibition that invites us to reflect on the relationship between aesthetics, politics and identity that still innervates our daily horizon. The exhibition title is taken from a verse by the Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann, “lonely are all bridges”, which evokes the experimental spirit of two artists whose work goes beyond conventions and builds bridges across different disciplines, moving between art, fashion, design and photography.
