Visual Artist Kristin Reger presents IRRLICHT with Salón Silicón during Mexico City’s Art Week

MEXICO CITY – Salón Silicón is pleased to present IRRLICHT, a solo exhibition of new works by Kristin Reger at Salón ACME during Mexico City's Art Week, opening on February 8, 2024. Derived from the German term for "mistaken light," Irrlicht refers to enigmatic orbs of light that manifest in swamplands. Globally, folklore suggests that these luminous entities hold a sinister allure, leading people astray, both in mind and spirit. In Mexico, the phenomenon is known as "fuego fátuo" or "pointless fire," accentuating the inexplicable allure that binds enchantment to the abyss.

IRRLICHT will feature three monumental mixed-media paintings on sustainable silk, accompanied by smaller pieces and vessels created during Reger’s recent residency at Cerámica Suro in Guadalajara. Here, Reger masterfully explores the dichotomy between scientific explanations and spiritual interpretations. While science offers chemical explanations, the artist delves into the realm of metaphysical spirits and emotional projections. The paintings become a canvas for the allegory of desire, a symbolic representation of consuming, wanting to be consumed, and the allure of the unknowable.

The artworks in IRRLICHT coalesce to weave a narrative of an all-consuming desire, where fetish becomes a synecdoche for approximating the unknowable Other. Reger's deft pendulous strokes and psychedelic planes create a visual tapestry where deconstructed figures emerge from decisive, skeletal slashes. Each canvas embodies primordial entities influenced by peculiar states of mind, where bliss and fury spill forth in a riot of color, texture, and line, transcending the cerebral.
