Freedom of Movement with YH, a brand designed by Stephanie (Yu-Hsuan Chen)
YH is a luxury sportswear brand designed by Stephanie (Yu-Hsuan Chen) that creates clothing that shape feminine bodies in a comfortable way, considering the movement of the material and wearer creating a harmony between the two.
“The collection is inspired by the contrast between the bold city skyline and soft country landscape in relation to the woman who shares this duality. Focusing on the relationship between form and the garments to create fluidity in the designs that empower their wearer. Colour blocking is used as a technique to express these ideas. Feminine and functional.”
Y.H showcased their SS20 collection at NYFW, which consists of ten looks, each piece is carefully designed with the relationship of the wearer and their garments as the utmost importance. This fluidity is executed through Stephanie’s close attention to precise pattern cutting techniques the use of modern materials and high technology fabric bonding. Y.H develops sportswear unlike any other, where the clothes and motion hold equal importance striking a beautiful balance of movement and style, focusing on the interaction between the garments and form.
Colour is extremely important to Y.H collections. The designs approach this through the use of colour-blocking. This technique is seen to denote the concept in each of her collections. The SS20 collection takes inspiration from the uneven skylines of cities in contrast to the clear open landscape of the countryside. This is also reflected in the atmosphere of these scenarios- with the tranquility of the countryside in opposition to the bustling buzz of the city. The bold colours and brush strokes seen in this collection are representative of the city, where the minimalistic aesthetic of her designs resonates with the countryside.
Therefore, the designs also target women who can relate to this contrast- empowering her as strong and independent through the colour and fluidity alike the city, yet aware of the tender side to her personality, which can be seen in the representation of the countryside and minimalism. This collection infuses bright colour blocks in oranges, reds and yellows which strike through the base tones of midnight blues in a poising contradiction that is harmonized through the balance in the tones.
Stephanie graduated from studying BFA Fashion Design from Pratt Institute in New York and since, she has continued to develop collections that fit within this intricate concept that epitomizes Y.H. Born in Taiwan, the brand takes after her initials- Yu-Hsuan Chen, although she prefers to be called Stephanie. The future of Y.H will continue to embrace this concept, exploring it in new ways
