Teenage life must be hard - George Alice knows something about it and dives us into her world with the new single ‘’Teenager’’
Words: Giorgia Ribaldone / giorgiariba
Despite the global pandemic, 2020 has been a bright year for George Alice / georgealicemusic, the 17-years-old Aussie singer and songwriter who won the Triple J Unearthed competition last year with the song Circles.
Since then, her life has got an incredible turn: Circles was streamed more than 7 million times climbing to #31 on Spotify's Global Discovery Chart.
Paving the way of this extraordinary success, George Alice has just delivered her new single Teenager. Co-written with Maribelle and mixed by Neal Pogue (Tyler The Creator, PINK! Anderson. Paak, Robyn), this song is a concentrate of truth and authenticity. Who better than a teenager can talk about adolescence? She speaks sincerely to her peers about something she lives in first-person: being seen and heard but not listed.
Waiting for her next successful move, we interviewed this rising star to snatch some curiosities: from her inspirations and future plans to her favourite french fries, read the full text to find everything out!
When “Circles” was realised you were just 15. How does it feel to be a teenager entering the highly competitive music industry?
Personally, I don’t look at the music industry competitively, I think creating music with the right intentions is all I need to feel comfortable and authentic. I’m really excited for my future in the music and all that it will bring.
What changed in your daily life after winning the Triple J Unearthed High competition last year?
Everything changed the second I won, the entire country found out that I had won at the same time I did, so there was no time to really let things sink in. I left school really soon after, started playing shows and making more music, along with lots of travel and time away from home.
Your soul combines pop, electronic and indie vibes. How would you collocate yourself in the current music scene?
I try not to pay much attention to genres or where I place myself within them, I really enjoy making indie/pop music but would also not shy away from writing in any others.
What is the main inspiration behind your songs? Tell us a bit more about your composition process.
I like to write about what I see and what I feel, sometimes it starts with a concept rather than a song itself, but it changes all the time. There’re no boundaries so whatever I can milk inspiration from I do.
Your new single “Teenager” is finally out (congrats!). Being written right after you finished high school, we can say it symbolises the end of your adolescence. What comes next?
I think the next steps after Teenager are something that showcase the maturity and beauty behind all my concepts as well as showcasing more of my personality and who I’m becoming, and who I want to be.
For the video clip once again you accompanied yourself with the director Zoee Marsh. What do you appreciate the most about her work?
Zo really understands who I am and what I want to achieve, we work super closely on everything that gets put out and her work is the best! She will use everybody’s unique talents, features and strengths to advantage in every way possible. I am so blessed to have a mentor like Zoee.
You always try to convey powerful and honest messages to your peers. What would you say to them during this heavy covid-situation?
I think it’s really important to stick together. Hold onto your friends, hold onto your loved ones and use this time to stand still. Use it to your advantage, remind yourself you’re doing great no matter what you have achieved during this time. You’re not meant to be put through something like this and everyone is doing a great job at holding things together.
Last, but not least, where do you eat your best french fries?
Well, controversially they are called hot chips in Australia... the best place here is definitely Oporto.
