London | Ana Mendieta at Tate Modern
There are artists who leave objects behind, and there are artists who leave traces.
This summer, Tate Modern presents the UK's first major exhibition dedicated to Ana Mendieta in more than a decade. Bringing together over 120 works, the exhibition moves through the artist's photographs, films, sculptures, installations and the celebrated Silueta Series, revealing a practice that dissolved the boundaries between body and landscape.
Born in Havana in 1948 and exiled to the United States at the age of twelve, Mendieta spent much of her life searching for ways to reconnect with place, memory and origin. Earth, fire, water and stone became recurring materials through which she explored absence, ritual and transformation. Her works were often conceived as temporary gestures, returning naturally to the landscape from which they emerged.
Alongside the iconic Siluetas, Tate Modern presents newly restored films, rarely exhibited drawings and paintings, late sculptures and restaged installations, offering a broader view of an artist whose work continues to resist categorisation. Throughout the exhibition, sculpture, photography and performance are never treated as separate disciplines but as different ways of approaching the same question: how can a body belong to the world?
More than forty years after they were first made, Mendieta's works retain an extraordinary immediacy. They speak quietly about exile, identity and the persistence of memory, while remaining deeply rooted in the physical experience of the natural world.
Ana Mendieta is on view at Tate Modern, London, from 9 July 2026 until 10 January 2027.
