From the art of Taekwondo to landing the role of Petra Small in the up and coming Netflix’s series Jupiter’s Legacy, The Tale of the worlds first superheroes, and their children who struggle to leave to their parents legacy, Tenika Davis discusses the inspiration behind the character and how we can transfer that into our own lives. Tenika spoke to us about the importance of using our own powers for better, speaking your truth publicly and sending nothing but kindness into this world.

Your new series Jupiter’s Legacy drops on Netflix May 7th, what drawn you to this role?

I prayed for a role in a production where I could play a strong and powerful character in a story that had depth and meaning. I’ve always had a desire to be a light in dark places in focusing on that, Petra Small, found me. Family is the most important thing to me. It’s such a blessing to be able to be a part of a narrative that focuses on complex family relationships.

What inspiration can you take from your character, Petra Small?

Petra Small is intelligent, strong, brave, empathetic, and compassionate. She fights fiercely for her loved ones and what she believes is right, yet struggles with discerning what exactly that is. She embodies the best qualities in all of us at our highest self. But the beauty is that she doesn’t know the full extent of her power, yet. Her dedication, loyalty, courage, and diligence to boldly do what is right is inspiring.

If you could have one superpower in the real world what would it be and why?

Psychokinesis. The ability to control minds. If I had that power I would infuse every human being on this planet with more love, empathy, compassion and remove the veil of separateness between us in the hope of making this world a better place for us all to live in.

Did your training in Taekwondo prepare you for any of the action in Jupiter’s Legacy?

Yes, absolutely. Having a background in martial arts was a huge asset! Without that foundation, I wouldn’t have had the discipline to train as hard as I did to throw those punches. I’m so grateful to the stunt team for helping us push past our physical limits to accomplish what we did.

How has the discipline of Taekwondo affected you in your life?

My dad started training me in Taekwondo when I was 12 years old because I lacked confidence. As I excelled in it I started to believe in myself, it gave me the confidence, focus, and discipline I needed. I’ve applied the training and lessons to everything I do in life. I wouldn’t be who I am today without it.

Is there a dream role you’ve always wanted, a certain character or genre?

I’ve always wanted to be a superhero getting the opportunity to be one is my childhood dream realized. I’m a die-hard sci-fi fantasy lover. Any strong characters with powers, if I could play a lawyer, Viola Davis’ daughter, and a vampire next I would be in heaven.

From the age of 10, you’ve had an interest in Public Speaking, where did this come from?

As a child, I never felt like my voice was heard. I would act out in school trying to get attention. Public speaking gave me a positive outlet to channel that energy and have my voice heard.

Did anyone inspire this passion for public speaking?

Oprah Winfrey. When I was growing up her show was always on. I was fascinated by her eloquence and ability to articulate what she was thinking. I wanted to be just like her. She’s always been a strong role model for me.

How important is it for you to speak your truth publicly?

Having a voice and being heard means everything to me. I’ve spent a lot of time feeling silenced, like what I had to say wasn’t valued or appreciated and would be met with a negative reaction. I’ve learned that it’s important not to be afraid to connect with others by sharing your truth and story.

You competed on Canada’s Next Top Model, how was you’re time on that series?

In all honesty, coming from a small town north of Toronto being chosen as a contestant on CNTM was a dream come true. I will always be grateful. However, it was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve had in my life. I learned about the modeling industry, making television and society simultaneously and the lessons were really tough at times.

What was the best thing you learned from this experience?

Nothing great happens on your own. I’ve learned the power of being a gracious team player. I’m grateful to everyone who worked on Jupiter’s Legacy for helping me learn that.

Lastly, if you could travel to one place with nothing but one book were and what would it be?
